Looking up sources, I was reminded that _The Hidden Hand_
(1928) was not Carroll John Daly's first novel. In 1927 he
had published _The Snarl of the Beast_. Thus, as far as
hardboiled novels go, he definitely has chronological
priority over Hammett and Whitfield
(I think Gardner's first novel came even later). Was Max
Brand already writing novels in the twenties?
