<<So Hammett's the first successful hard-boiled
detective novel ...>>
I think that Daly's _The Hidden Hand_ (1928) appeared before
Hammett's first. This novel was reissued by Harper and
someone here pointed out that it's available electronically
(for a fee). It's pure camp, but the action scenes are
extremely effective. That's Daly's great contribution; as an
action writer, he could surpass Hammett (average Hammett, not
a masterpiece like _The Gutting of Couffignal_!).
