Wait a minute! What the fuck difference does it make what Jim Messenger does for a living?

Messenger is not a detective. Not a crime-solver. He is a man with an empty part right in the center of where he's supposed to be. Following Ms. Lonesome leads him to another place.

Don't matter if he's an accountant.

Or a fireman.

Or a beggar, or a thief.

The novel is too fine, and Messenger too sturdy to be confined by small, classifying minds.

Accountant detective, indeed! PB
