I want to add Richard Barre's name to the list of hard boiled
up and comers. He carries the classic PI torch with grace and
dignity.
At the other end of the spectrum there is Newton Thornburg, a
writer who has been toiling in the hardboiled salt mines for
thirty years now with diminishing financial results (bad
publishing luck), but who can still spin a good yarn. He met
with some early success with TO DIE IN CALIFORNIA and CUTTER
AND BONE (which was made into the GREAT film CUTTER'S WAY)
but I don't see his name tossed around very often. He's
written eleven novels, all of them interesting, all of them
hard boiled on one level or another. I think he's due some
attention and respect.
His most recent books are EVE'S MEN and A MAN'S GAME. They be
HARD!
