I think it worked well because the director approached this work as more sophisticated than most movie people do Leonard's work. That's why Get Sorty was so slapstick--in your face. The humor in Out of Sight came more naturally, which is how Leonard says it should come in the writing, too. The situations and dialogue must be approached deadpan for the humor to really work.
