There must be tons of these. Let me add "Start Screaming Murder" by Talmage Powell--it has carny folk (summering in Florida), though not a carnival/circus itself. Edgar Box's (Gore Vidal's) "Death Likes It Hot" (not hardboiled) begins with a murdered midget, but I haven't read any further. I too would like to find an affordable copy of "Mad Ball." Speaking of Frederic Brown, does he also qualify as a writer of HB/SF?
