For insights, actually more critical analysis, Woody Haut's "Pulp Culture" and "Neon Noir" track hardboiled right up to the Nineties. Great books. But they probably won't satisfy on the beginnings of the genre.

Speaking of...Nolan's Ross Macdonald bio. Necessary.
