The incident you refer to was in The Maltese Falcon. Spade is
tellig Bridgit about a missing persons case he was on, where
a man, named Flitcraft I think, disappeared, leaving his
wife, family, etc. When Spade caught up to hiom, he was
living in another city, with a similar job, similar wife,
etc. He tells Spade that one day a beam fell and narrowly
missed him, so he took stock of his life and went out to find
something different. Eventually, he settled into the same
routine as before. "He got used to beams falling," Spade
explains, "then they stopped falling, so he got used to them
not falling."
