Block's best, especially in terms of this list are his Matt Scudder books. I'd recommend starting with either Eight Million Ways to Die or When the Sacred Ginmill Closes and read the rest from there.

I'm also a sucker for his older paperback originals, which go in and out of print, especially Such Men Are Dangerous and Girl With the Long Green Heart.

His recent Hit Man is also very good.
