I'll third the emotion about Mark Monlux's site/e-mail
service (weekly cheese!), and toss in a thought I mentioned a
week ago or so: that the demand for larger books by
publishers has allowed some writers to get away with far too
much description, pontificating or bogus sub-plots.
If he were alive today, I wonder if Chandler would be
pounding out bloated 5-600 pagers? And back in the fifties,
James Lee Burke's stuff might be tight, poetic little
hardboiled gems. How much is a writer's style, and how much
is just meeting the fashion of the time?
