Has anyone read a Texas author named Max Martinez? I'm about halfway through his most recent crime novel, LAYOVER, published a year or so ago by Arte Publico Press (which is associated with the University of Houston). I have some mixed feelings about the book. I don't particularly like his prose style, which is a bit long winded and overly narrative at times, but I do like his characters
(mostly Chicano) and his setting (a rural county in South Texas). It's sort of like reading Cain, only with the characters primarily Hispanic. Definitely noir, pretty hardboiled. He published an earlier crime novel, WHITE LEG; plus he has written a couple of short story collections.

Just curious if he's being read very much.

Later...Kip
