RARA-AVIS: Hammett on film

William Denton (buff@pobox.com)
Sun, 30 May 1999 23:20:53 -0400 (EDT) I saw some reviews of "Dash and Lilly" in the papers over the weekend.
Apparently Judy Davis is really good as Hellmann, no surprise since she's
an excellent actress, but Sam Shepherd isn't quite right as Hammett. The
articles made me wonder how many people these days know who Hellmann is. I
bet a lot more know of Hammett, even if they've never read anything by
him.

Where else has Hammett appeared in movies? Jason Robards played him in
_Julia_, but I haven't seen that so I don't know if he's any good.
Frederic Forrest did a pretty good job of playing Hammett in _Hammett_,
based on Joe Gores' novel where Hammett gets mixed up in a mystery.
Is that it?
