The old Blue Note recordings of the great Dexter Gordon almost
always
sound "noir" to me, whatever that means. His live set in
Denmark (with
Kenny Drew, Pedersen, and Heath, on three Black Lion CDs is
hardboiled.
I don't want to get carried away because West Coast jazz is one
of my
passions -- and quite irrelevant to this group.
But I must say that Coleman Hawkins's smoky ballads are
perfect music
for *both* hardboiled and noir action.
