Tue, 18 May 1999 18:24:58 -0500 Bill's right. Warren Zevon's self-titled first album is tres noir. The
pearl-handled deck line comes from a song called "Carmelita" (by the way, Dwight
Yoakum does a nice cover of it on a Flaco Jiminez album, but that's getting a
little esoteric). There's another song on Zevon's first album called
"Desperadoes Under the Eaves" that reminds me of Raymond Chandler put to music.
Sort of. And, more recently, Zevon's written songs with Carl Hiaasen! There's
a tasty number called "Seminole Bingo" about one of those 1980s international
junk bond dealers/outlaws on the run in the Everglades. It's from a CD called
"Mutineer," which isn't a particularly great CD, but the song IS great.

In rock music, don't overlook Warren Zevon, especially the "Excitable Boy"
album. And the first one, whatever it was. "I'm sittin' here playin'
solitaire, with my pearl-handled deck." Great line.
