I have a Richard Sale novel called Death at Sea, a Popular Library
paperback with a great cover featuring a bound woman with heaving bosoms
in a ripped white shirt staring intently at two hands in the foreground
struggling over a gun. The title page notes it was originally published
as Destination Unknown and describes it as "A Mystery Novel." I've
never read it, but the story of "Murder aboard a stricken ship" does not
look hardboiled.
