Re: RARA-AVIS: Re: PIMP

Sun, 09 May 1999 00:03:55 -0800 I read _Pimp_ and was disappointed. On the one hand, the author
obviously had literary talent and street savvy; on the other, the story
is loose and unstructured and the tone is not coherent throughout the
book. I would rate it an honorable failure. Still, I am always happy to
explore the byways of hardboiled literature. We can't always be reading
Chandler, Hammett, and other canonical authors.

May I suggest James Sallis's _The Long-Legged Fly_ as a future reading?
This book should resonate with rara-avians. I would also like to suggest
George Pelecanos's _The Big Blowdown_, an ambitious novel which I read a
few months ago. It impressed me very favorably, both in style and
content.
