For whatever it may be worth, Macdonald said in interviews that
he
thought Newman did a good job as Archer/Harper. He didn't go
so far
as to say Newman was the best choice, but he *did* say
something along
the lines of Newman being a very good representation of the
sort of
guy Archer *could* be.
When the TV-movie version of *The Underground Man*, with Peter
Graves
as Archer, was being made, he was also complimentary about
Graves's
performance.
Of course, all these may have been market-driven comments.
Macdonald,
after all, had a living to make, and running down film
versions of
one's books probably isn't the best way to make future film
deals.
I'm not sure how he felt about Brian Keith in the short-lived
*Archer*
