Apparently the novel came before the play, but the litigation didn't start
until the play was profiled in Life--which suggests to me that the play may
have been more successful financially than the novel was.

(And, okay, I can understand the Nixon/Ellroy/hardboiled connection--but
don't I get brownie points for mentioning a Bogart film originally? :) )
