a particular favorite of mine. For those who haven't read it, it is
about a man who immerses himself so much in the world and mind (!) of
Cervantes that he ends up writing *the exact same book*. However, the
book reads *very differently* because it is a modern work.

I thought of this fascinating story several times while reading Robert
Parker's recreation of Chandler in _Poodle Springs_.

The story is apposite in our era of insatiable nostalgia. Now I am off
to write like John D. MacDonald.
