RARA-AVIS: Sins of the City

Wed, 14 Apr 1999 09:00:47 EDT I've stumbled across a book that fellow Rara Avarians are sure to dig: "Sins
of the City: The Real Los Angeles Noir" by Jim Heimann. It's a collection of
gritty, 30s, 40s and 50s-era L.A. vice photos, peppered with quotes from guys
like Chandler and Nathanael West, as well as deep captions and brief essays
giving you the lowdown on the Elizabeth Short murder, vice raids, corrupt
cops, etc.

It's from Chronicle Books, and I think just starting to appear at bookstores.
(I work at a men's mag in New York, and I nicked it from the "books received"
pile.) Highly recommended, especially if you enjoy Ellroy's nightmarish trips
into post-war L.A. The photo of James Edgar "Two Gun" Davis, LAPD police
chief in the 30s, is worth the cover price alone.
