Re: RARA-AVIS: Critics again....

Sun, 4 Apr 1999 11:49:50 EDT As someone who has been reviewing books in a syndicated column -- and getting
paid for it -- for a number of years now, I can tell you the perennial
favorites get almost no attention from me. Clancy, Cornwell, Parker all will
become best-sellers regardless of what I have to say about them. When I first
started reviewing, I did do one Clancy book. The most-remembered line from
the review was, "He writes like he discovered a sale on padding at New York
Carpet World." I haven't read one of his since.

I will take note in my April column that Parker hit his 25th Spenser and
still entertains. That's a milestone worth a mention.

I would much prefer using my space to recognize writers my readers might not
otherwise hear of. That way, I discover new talent, I am entertained by a new
voice, and I pass along the word, as I see it, anyway.
