RARA-AVIS: Ross Macdonald

Wed, 31 Mar 1999 12:56:15 -0600 I'm with you on Ross Macdonald. I just re-read THE MOVING TARGET and loved
it. It has never bothered me that his novels follow a similar pattern.
This his how many great writer approach the major themes they tackle: they
keep working on it, perfecting it, trying to get it right in their fiction.

James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels, especially the early ones, are
generally very similar in themes and even story elements. This is a classic
trait of hardboiled fiction. I don't know why Macdonald gets knocked around
so much for it.
