<<Mark mentions that Shoot the Piano Player will be
reissued 4/27.
I believe the film has been available for some time. It's
listed in my
1998 Facets catalog.>>
It has been available for a long time. I bought it in the
late eighties.
By the way, the French title is _Tirez sur le pianiste_.
Therefore the
English translation is correct.
This is a very great film indeed, even for Truffaut. Aznavour
is perfect
in the central role; it's hard to forget his sad face. In my
opinion,
Trufaut took a good but not exceptional novel and turned it
into a
cinematic masterpiece by dint of casting, timing,
photography, and
subtlety in spades. The film is moody and melancholy rather
than
feverish, and even finds room for humor. By toning down the
suspense and
slowing down the action, Truffaut made the story his own. It
would be
interesting to compare this with, say, a Sam Fuller version
of the same
story.
