I'd also recommend McIllnavey's three Inspector Laidlaw books, as well
as his non-crime novels. 'The Big Man' is not a crime novel per se, but
still pretty grim in its depiction of the illegal fight game.

Incidentally, McIllvaney has always claimed, with some justification
IMO, that the television series 'Taggart' was a rip-off of his Laidlaw
books.
