I'm constructing this entirely from memory. (Given my memory's state that's
always dangerous).

Seems to me that Dudley was in it, but not as a major player as in the
other novels. At the time, he was in charge of a special squad attached to
the Black Dahlia investigation.

They would pick up people they had down as freaks, take them to and old
meat packing plant, beat them, screw with their minds and so forth. He came
across as a total psycho from the get go.
