I am almost sure it's in a poem by Wallace Stevens, but can't
recall the
title or find it in his collected poetry. It's also possible
that the
phrase is older, though I did not find in my dictionary of
quotations.
By the way, _The Wench is Dead_ is a famous Fredric Brown
title. Could
Dexter be paying homage to Brown by using the same title? If
not, it's
in poor taste - sort of like using _The Long Goodbye_ as a
title for a
contemporary novel.
