RARA-AVIS: The Big Nowhere

Tue, 16 Mar 1999 22:21:08 +0100 Just been reading James Ellroy's _The Big Nowhere_, and more impressed
than ever with the technique.

Jump shot to parallel investigations, with dribs and drabs of clues and
information that one detective is looking for popping up in the other's
searches for something else entirely. A really clever way of letting the
*reader* in on the straight dingus while the *dicks* still haven't got a
clue.

Am I flyin, or does this novel replay a lot of the character situations
from _LA Confidential_, the movie? I haven't got my hands on that novel
yet, but there's a lot of very close parallels here between _Nowhere_
and that film, including the inbred sex triangle (quadrangle) with the
killer babe.

Just a few thoughts while y'all are coasting between readings...

Cheers, --- Phil
