: My favorites are _The Chill_, _The Far Side of the
Dollar_,_The
: Underground Man_, and his early (1947) non-mystery _Blue
City_, which
: strongly reminds me of Norman Mailer's great early
novels.
Those first three are some of the Lew Archer titles I
remember most
favourably. I'm sure any Macdonald fan would recommend them.
_Blue City_
may not be a mystery, but it's classic hardboiled story: man
comes to
town (here, the town he left as a youth) and proceeds to bust
it wide
open. It was made into a Brat Pack movie in the '80s; I think
I saw it
and I think it was nothing special.
I'm a sucker for anything where a guy comes to town and stirs
up trouble,
or anything where someone wakes up next to a dead body.
