<<With all this talk about Ross Macdonald, I've heard
very little about
the specific books. Any suggestions as to his
best?>>
My favorites are _The Chill_, _The Far Side of the
Dollar_,_The
Underground Man_, and his early (1947) non-mystery _Blue
City_, which
strongly reminds me of Norman Mailer's great early novels.
The only
novel of his that I find weak is _The Blue Hammer_. Chances
are that, if
you like one book of his, you will like them all.
I wonder what sort of a writer Millar would have turned out
to be if,
instead of falling under Chandler's spell, he had followed
Mailer and
other cutting-edge realist writers outside of the mystery
genre.
