Last night Robert B. Parker chatted on barnesandnoble.com
about his
latest Spenser book. Given the fact that Parker's doctoral
dissertation
examines the work of Hammett, Chandler, and Macdonald,
someone asked
whether Parker felt an inspirational debt particularly to
Macdonald.
Parker said he didn't feel indebted; however, he did say
Macdonald's
work made people take detective stories seriously.
Also for the record, Robert Crais--whose name has come up in
this
discussion--has cited Macdonald, Parker, and Rex Stout as
early
influences.
