RARA-AVIS: Avallone

Tue, 2 Mar 1999 12:00:44 -0600 (CST) I was sorry to read about the death of Michael Avallone. He was a strange
guy, and I eventually ended my correspondence with him because he'd become
so bitter about his treatment by a publishing world that no longer had any
use for him and about the lack of respect he received from most current
mystery writers (and just about everyone else). He had a long run as a
published writer, over 30 years, but probably a lot of what he wrote
wouldn't have any interest for readers these days. His writing style truly
has to be experienced to be appreciated. But I'm glad I knew him in spite
of his quirks, and I'm glad I still have copies of THE BOUNCING BETTY and
FLIGHT HOSTESS ROGERS, among other classics of his, on my shelves.
