The Studios contract boilerplate on acquisition of a novel
usually gives
them remake and sequel rights AND ownership of the characters.
Westlake
pulled a caper here to get away with maintaining ownership of
his
character, and I suspect the studio had to pay for it again
when they
wanted the right to use the Point Blank character (again) in
PAYBACK.
Neat. Maybe it'll turn into a Dortmunder book.
