"Smart-Aleck Kill" was Chandler's second published mystery
story, a direct sequel to his first "Blackmailers Don't Shoot."
He later wrote that he started to feel most comfortable with his
craft in his third published story, "Finger Man," which was,
essentially, the very first Phil Marlowe story (though the
