RARA-AVIS: Bookstore Categories

Tue, 19 Jan 1999 10:51:40 PST My favorite San Francisco bookstore (new & used books) is Green Apple
Books on Clement Street. On my last visit (decidedly disappointing as my
search for anything by Donald Hamilton came up empty), I noticed they'd
created a subcategory for Hardboiled books. Some of the books housed
there weren't appropriate (Lillian Braun's cat books?!), but they had
tons of Jim Thompson, Vachss, Himes, Chandler, etc. Block was in the
general mystery section. I picked up a copy of Noirotica and Noirotica
II, subtitled Pulp Friction.

Have many of you found Hardboiled books separated from the general
mystery category at your favorite bookstores? I was at the Strand in NYC
recently, and I didn't catch it, but I wouldn't be shocked to discover
they had done likewise. Gratefully, I'll be back in NYC in October and
can finish the damage I started.
