RARA-AVIS: Lansdale and Shiner

Sun, 10 Jan 1999 15:09:23 -0600 (CST) I just picked up a book that should be of interest to some of you. It's
PRIVATE EYE ACTION AS YOU LIKE IT, published by Crossroads Press. It
contains the p.i. stories of Joe Lansdale and Lew Shiner, both the ones they
wrote individually and in collaboration. Most of these were published in
MIKE SHAYNE'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE in the late 1970s and early '80s. The
stories are worth the price of the book, but even more interesting to me are
the introductions by Lansdale and Shiner. Some great insights into young
writers just beginning their careers, into writing detective fiction, and
into writing for MIKE SHAYNE, which Lansdale calls "the last of the pulps."
