I didn't know whether Dr. Pepper was still considered a southern beverage
since it has had such national exposure in advertising during the past
several years.

I grew up in a small town in south-central Kentucky (just north of the
Tennessee state line) that has slowly been losing some of its distinctive
southern traits during the past 40 years I've been around. I wonder if this
is true of most southern states, and whether this makes it trickier to
include those southern touches in contemporary novels without making them
seem mere caricature. -- Duane
