RARA-AVIS: Get Elmore!

Wed, 30 Dec 1998 15:34:07 -0500 So the latest Lands' End catalogue arrives in the day's mail, a result
of my purchase, years ago, of some turtlenecks from that company, and
who do I see on its cover but Elmore Leonard, frowning, with this
blurb in largeish type: "'Get Shorty' author Elmore Leonard and tough
guy Chili Palmer have been Pinpoint men for years. Page 4."
("Pinpoint Buttondowns" are a Lands' End dress shirt.) Inside, we
find Leonard's photo (two different ones) on two facing pages, along
with the Pinpoint shirts. "This is the second in our new Guest
Copywriter series in which notable authors are invited to write about
one of our products in their singular style," Lands' End states.
(Gee, maybe I could write about turtlenecks for them!)

Leonard's copy is as follows: "Remember Chili Palmer in GET
SHORTY? He's back in my new book, BE COOL, and he's wearing his
favorite dress shirt, a silky cotton Pinpoint.
"This time around Chili's in the music business. He's managing a
rock band while looking for a movie idea. It's a scene where the
prevailing style, the dress code, is grunge. Look like you do yard
work for a living but drive a Rolls.
"Chili is neither impressed nor intimidated. He's a
style-setter, not one to follow the crowd. That's how I see him in
the book, a man with his own perception of what's cool, never afraid
to be himself. A Pinpoint man."

Well, I'll be happy to read another Leonard book about Chili Palmer,
anyway.
