Re: RARA-AVIS: This mea culpa will be televised.....

Sun, 6 Dec 1998 11:34:38 -0500 (EST) I agree Homicide isn't nearly as good this season. And, personally, I
was glad to see Kellerman go at the end of last season. The Luther
Mahoney plot was just stretched way past breaking point. However,
exacty those things that annoyed me about him as a cop work for him as a
shady PI, particularly the attitude. It was brilliant opening with him
taking adultery pictures through a window, immediately defining him in
terms of the genre where "honorable" PIs refuse to take domestic cases.
And the totally non-sincere disclaimer ("I advise you not to look at
these pictures") reminded me of JJ Gittes in Chinatown. I look forward
to the show next week, which is more than I can say for most of the
post-Andre Braugher shows.

However, this isn't the first time this season Homicide has done noir.
There was an earlier episode written by David Simon (who wrote the book
the series is based on) which was an homage/spoof of noir movies,
complete with slinky femme fatale. It wasn't in keeping with the show's
normal "realistic" tone, but it was kind of fun.

Also, I, for one, am thankful for the note about City of Angels. I
remember that short-lived series very fondly. If my memory is correct,
it was created by Something Glen Caron of later Moonlighting fame and
starred Wayne Rogers. It was set in the 1930s and is full of Chandler
references and touches.
