RARA-AVIS: Get Carter

Mon, 23 Nov 1998 02:07:59 PST I'd certainly support Ted Lewis's 'Get Carter' to be on the reading
list. On the whole us Brits don't really cut the mustard when it comes
to hardboiled writing, but 'Get Carter' certainly hits the spot. And
for those on the list with cable TV, the excellent Mike Hodges film of
'Get Carter' is regularly shown on TNT.

Ted Kavanagh's Duffy books are ok, I suppose, but I wouldn't get too
excited about them. Julian Barnes (aka Ted Kavanagh) always strikes me
as writing like a very clever, slick, smug undergraduate. And I speak
as one who's read several of his novels, mainly to see what all the fuss
was about.
