that come to mind besides those already mentioned are _The Price of
Murder_ (Gold Medal from 1957), _Please Write for Details_ (Gold Medal
from 1959), and _The Executioners_ (1957 Gold Medal). The latter was
made into the scary film _Cape Fear_ with Robert Mitchum and, more
recently, remade into the ridiculous one with Robert de Niro.

John D. also wrote science fiction. Three excellent novellas in this
genre are collected in the volume _Time and Tomorrow_. I found the two
"good old stuff" collections disappointing - MacDonald rewrote some of
these old stories for reasons that he explains in the foreword (mainly,
to bring them up to date). On the other hand, there are many excellent
MacDonald stories in hardboiled and detective fiction anthologies.
