Of course it crops up in other fiction, too, but you could be
right
that noir and hardboiled writers use it more. I seem to
recall a lot
of animalistic stuff in Mike Hammer stories, but perhaps more
on the
"wolfish grin" side. Hammer's not far removed from an
animal
himself, hunting, I suppose, in the urban jungle.
