could anyone accuse Gorman of being a hack? Put aside his "hack writing"
for a minute (whether you like his books or not, they ARE well written)
and explain how the guy who has ALMOST singlehandedly resurrected crime
gems from the past could be a hack? Outside of Bill Pronzini, I can't
think of another editor who has done more to keep good 50s noir writing
in the "public's" eye.>

Don't forget Greenberg - he may hold the record for the largest number
of anthologies edited. It is true that he has dealt with mysteries in
general and not only with hardboiled or noir writing, but he has
included a lot of obscure but great stuff.

I have several anthologies edited by Gorman, all of them very
satisfying. I assume his selections represent his taste rather than some
statistical measure of "importance" (what a word to use here!), but what
else is an editor supposed to do?

The complaint expressed by Fritz Limbacher would be easier to grasp, and
to discuss, if he would mention which material (or lack thereof)
specifically shows Gorman's "hack editing".

Unfortunately, I have been working overtime to finish a project and have
not been able to buy it yet, but it's on my agenda for next weekend -
first in order of importance and well ahead of its closest contender --
building a new doghouse.
