RARA-AVIS: Re: Cats

Mon, 09 Nov 1998 13:01:45 -0500 Debbie Chilson has obviously started a promising new thread, to which
Ziggy Nix had added this thought: "For some bizarre reason cats seem
to be a common item in hard-boiled and noir writing. I think that it
works into the stock femme fatale characteristics. Cats are
independent feral creatures...."

You had me nodding in agreement, Ziggy, up to that last (truncated)
sentence. Because you were on to something. But the "stock femme
fatale characteristics" are less those of "independent feral
creatures" than of the Siamese cat: pampered, spoiled, interested
only in herself, demanding attention on her own terms and capable of
slashing you with her claws when her will is thwarted. Purring one
moment and aloof the next, ruled solely by her own whims.

It's interesting that "feline" is usually used to describe a *female*
character, while canine imagery is more often applied to men (ignoring
"bitch" which has lost its original she-dog meaning by now).
