With regard to our reading for last month. I'm afraid I simply
stopped
reading after forty pages or so. The reason? Too violent and
for no
reason, IMHO. I like violence in my hard-boiled writing as much
as
anyone else, even graphic violence -- if it's germane to the
plot. I felt
Raymond overused this tool for dramatic, shock effect rather
than for
character development and ultimatly for the enhancment of the
story-line.
As a result, I quickly became bored and stopped reading.
What did other people think? Does anyone have opinions on the
use of
gratuitous violence in hardboiled literature? Is there even
such a thing
as gratuitous violence in the genre?
