It seems worth noting that Stanley Ellin, though not generally regard as an
HB writer, wrote four very good PI novels. The first, for which he won
1958's Edgar for Best Novel, was entitled *The Eighth Circle*. The dust
jacket of the first edition directly quoted Dante's description of the
