RARA-AVIS: Yeah, sure, the lion sleeps with the lamb

Sun, 18 Oct 1998 15:40:38 -0400 (EDT) I was saddened and amused both at all the lovely words I heard about how
the academics were buddying up with the hard-boiled.

What follows is an excerpt from an alumna's email to those undergrads she
left behind. It was forwarded to me,

> ... selling the kinds of books that sell. Heaven forbid that they're
> "Genre" writing. Cuz, we all know genre writing isn't real writing. In
> fact, I was told point blank at the alumni meeting that in the future, if
> any student wants to write only genre and not something 'literary' they'll
> be selected OUT of the program. They won't be able to pass the portfolio
> review. How about that piece of news? Nice, huh?

At that same meeting the Director (& her lapdog) told me there was no
place for me in the program, either. That anybody who wanted to write
commercially "can learn by watching television." This year I teach
freshman composition.
