Let me add my recommendation to Philip Kerr's three Bernie
Gunther
novels. They are incredibly atmospheric and Gunther is a
wonderful
character. The series seems to've been meant by Kerr to be a
trilogy,
because the last entry ends with Gunther moving into the kind
of
domestic life in which sleuthing will have no part. I was
reminded of
both Chandler's and Ross Macdonald's final books.
Kerr has gone on to write some other books that read more
like Michael
Crichton than Chandler. One in particular that centers around
a search
in the Himalayas for the Yeti was particularly well-done--but
it won't
replace Bernie Gunther in my affections.
