RARA-AVIS: Kerr, Skinner and Smokers

Tue, 13 Oct 1998 16:59:23 -0700 Fred Willard (got it right this time) recommended Philip Kerr's three Berlin
novels featuring ex-policeman Bernie Gunther. They are exceptionally good
books. Penguin Books published an omnibus volume containing the three
novels in 1993. Cost is around $15, a terrific bargain.

Bob Skinner: Welcome to the bunch. I hope you find us worth your while.
Bill Crider was telling us at Bouchercon about your new book being dropped
by Kensington, after it was typeset. Bummer! I wish you the best in
finding a new publisher because your writing deserves it.

Smokers: A long time ago, when I was so much younger, I fought in several
smokers. They were usually amateur bouts sponsored by a club (school, Boy's
Cluyb, YMCA, or some such) and sometimes by a church. At least some
Catholic parishes would occasionally sponsor a smoker. Today the AAU
probably governs all such stuff. I doubt seriously that I could hold my
arms up for three minutes these days with 12 oz. gloves. Has amateur boxing
reduced the time per round to two minutes? More importantly, is this what
Chandler was talking about?

I still mean to put my poor notes on the Noir panel at Bouchercon together.
Wait for it.

Cheers,

Frank D.
