Tue, 13 Oct 1998 11:12:42 -0500 The Long Good-Bye is, along with The Big Sleep, one of Chandler's most
convoluted plots. Eileen Wade seems to have killed just about
everybody. Her first murder was committed for revenge against the woman
who had corrupted both of her men--Terry Lennox and Roger Wade. Roger
was a danger to her because he knew she was the murderer. Believing
that Terry Lennox had been wrongfully accused and believed killed over
the murder, Roger was self-destructing and became a danger to Eileen.
Marlowe dopes all of this out and drives Eileen to suicide, knowing that
the police can't convict her of anything. I sometimes go back and read
this book again, because the plot is impossible to remember in all its
detail.
