I'd say his best two are 'Get Carter' (the title was changed
for the Michael
Caine film) and GBH. Both are thoroughly hardboiled; GBH is
also rather
disturbing -- it's a story about a London gangster on the
run, and his descent
into (entirely justified!) paranoia. I found both riveting
reading.
As to the top ten HB, how could you miss out something by
David Goodis or by
Richard Stark (whose new novel is out next month)?
